Information
for Authors
The Online Journal of Urban Youth Culture is a peer-reviewed publication that began in January 2003. The Journal accepts electronic submissions only, and will publish issues semiannually in the months of October and April. We solicit contributions that are focused on urban youth. We encourage students, scholars, community based organizations, educators and those in both the private and public sectors to contribute to this journal. Our commitment is to provide a balanced perspective that is inclusive of everyone from different segments of society.
We are
accepting submissions in six categories (please
click here to learn more about the Youth Gallery):
- Synthesis
- These are peer-reviewed articles that bring together elements in
a new way, offering opportunities for theory, policy, or practice.
There is no mandated maximum length, but brevity and concision are
encouraged.
- Research
- These are peer-reviewed papers that present original research. The
core article is limited to no more than 4000 words; however, it may
include any number of appendices. Concerning appendices, in addition
to traditional products such as tables and graphs, we also encourage
authors to explore the online medium, to provide downloadable models,
computer animations of model output, and original databases. As always,
we encourage clarity, brevity, and concision, with the appendices
serving as an opportunity for expanding upon the information.
- Insight
- These are peer-reviewed papers that offer unique discoveries or
assessments that suggest new directions or clarify old ones, whether
theory, concepts, methods, or practice. The goal is to provide fresh
thinking to a multi-disciplinary audience. Insight articles differ
from research articles in their level of completeness. Insight pieces
are designed to illuminate new avenues, so, by their nature, they
have not have as much previous work to draw upon as research articles
do. The core article should not exceed 4000 words, with references
kept to a minimum.
- Perspective
- The editors will, on occasion, solicit opinion pieces
and editorials on topics that are important to the field. The essay
may stand alone or be part of a package of Perspective contributions,
and they may be tied to opportunties for online conversation through
our forum section. Limit of 2000 words.
- Commentary
- These are invited responses to Perspective articles. Limit of 1000
words.
- Response
- These brief pieces should expand or critique articles publishing
in the Journal, or they should offer concrete examples of how the
ideas are applied in the field. We again encourage you to think of
our online enviroment, so submissions can include hotlinks to other
websites, illustrations, animations or other elements that can help
to clarify the information presented. Length: 250 to no more than
1000 words.
